Tick Identification

Ticks are small, blood-feeding parasites that latch onto humans and animals as they pass through grassy, wooded, or brushy areas, making yards with tall grass, leaf litter, or dense vegetation prime real estate for these pests. Unlike many insects, ticks are arachnids with eight legs, flat, oval-shaped bodies, and a size that ranges from as small as a poppy seed to as large as a pencil eraser once engorged with blood. Their color can vary from reddish-brown to nearly black, and their bodies often expand and lighten in color after feeding.

Beyond the itchy, irritating bites they leave behind, ticks are notorious for transmitting illnesses like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis, making early detection and prevention especially important for protecting your family and pets.

If you've found ticks on your property or are dealing with recurring bites, don't wait for the risk to grow; call in the professionals at Neuse Termite and Pest Control. Our trained technicians use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) solutions to target tick populations at the source, treating yards and outdoor living spaces with pet- and child-safe products that keep your family protected while getting the job done right. Best of all, we offer free estimates, so you know exactly what you're dealing with before committing to a solution.

Two of the Most Common Ticks You’ll Encounter

Not all ticks look alike, and knowing the difference can help you identify a potential health risk more quickly. While there are dozens of tick species found throughout the country, homeowners are most likely to encounter just a couple of them in and around their property. Each type comes with its own habits, habitats, and health concerns, so understanding what sets them apart is an important step in protecting your home and family.

Below are two of the most common species found on residential properties:

  • The Black Legged Tick (Deer Tick) has a body with a flattened oval shape and no hard shell. Its sharply pointed mouthpart is visible when viewed from above. They measure between 1/8” and 1/16” in length and become much larger when engorged with blood.
  • The Brown Dog Tick is consistently 1/8” long but can grow up to a full ½” when engorged with blood. It has a flattened body with mouthparts visible from above, and the male has tiny pits scattered across its back.
