Termites

Termite Identification

Termites are often called “silent destroyers," and for good reason—these small, pale insects can chew through wood, flooring, and even wallpaper for months or years without any obvious signs of damage. Unlike many household pests, termites rarely announce their presence with visible activity; instead, they work quietly behind walls, under floors, and within foundations, feeding on the cellulose found in wood and other structural materials.

If you suspect termites have made themselves at home in your house, don't wait for the damage to spread; call in the professionals at Neuse Termite and Pest Control. Our trained technicians use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) solutions to identify the extent of the infestation and eliminate termites at the source, using pet- and child-safe products that keep your family protected throughout treatment. Best of all, we offer free estimates, so you know exactly what you're dealing with before committing to a solution.

Signs of a Termite Infestation

Termites are small insects, typically ranging from ¼ to ½ inch in length, with soft, pale, creamy-white to light brown bodies. Worker termites, the ones most commonly seen if a colony is disturbed, lack wings and eyes, giving them a somewhat translucent, grub-like appearance.

Swarming termites (called alates), on the other hand, are dark brown to black with two pairs of long, equal-length wings that extend well past their body, which often causes them to be mistaken for flying ants. Because termites spend most of their time hidden within walls, soil, or wood, spotting the insects themselves is rare, making it just as important to recognize the physical evidence they leave behind.

Give us a call if you notice the following:

  • Mud tubes — pencil-width tunnels made of mud and wood particles running along foundation walls, crawl spaces, or exterior walls, which termites use to travel while staying protected from the open air.
  • Hollow-sounding wood — wood that sounds papery or hollow when tapped, indicating termites have eaten away the interior while leaving a thin outer layer intact.
  • Discarded wings — small, uniform wings shed by swarming termites (alates) near windowsills, doors, or other entry points after a swarm.
  • Small holes or tunnels in wood — visible tunneling or pinpoint holes in wooden structures, furniture, or trim.
  • Frass (termite droppings) — tiny, dark pellets resembling sawdust or coffee grounds, often found near infested wood.
