Flea Identification

Fleas may be small, but the problems they cause are anything but. These tiny, wingless insects are notorious for infesting homes with pets, though you don't need a cat or dog to end up with a flea problem. They can hitch a ride indoors on clothing, secondhand furniture, or even through visits from wildlife like rodents and raccoons.

Once inside, fleas reproduce at an alarming rate, and because their life cycle includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages—with pupae able to lie dormant for weeks—an infestation can seem to disappear and then suddenly reappear with a vengeance. Adult fleas are small, reddish-brown, and flattened from side to side, allowing them to move quickly through pet fur or carpet fibers.

If fleas have made themselves at home in your house, don't wait for the infestation to spread; call in the experts at Neuse Termite and Pest Control. Our trained technicians use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) solutions to target fleas at every stage of their life cycle, from eggs to adults, using pet- and child-safe products that keep your family and furry companions protected throughout treatment. Best of all, we offer free estimates, so you know exactly what you're dealing with before committing to a solution.

Signs of a Flea Infestation in Your Home

Fleas are experts at hiding, which means many homeowners don't realize they have an infestation until it's well established. Because fleas spend much of their time on pets or nestled deep in carpet fibers and bedding, spotting the early warning signs is essential to catching the problem before it spreads throughout your home.

Keep an eye out for the following indicators:

  • Excessive pet scratching, biting, or licking — especially around the ears, neck, and base of the tail.
  • Flea dirt — small, dark specks resembling ground pepper found in pet fur, bedding, or on your floors (this is actually flea feces).
  • Visible fleas or jumping insects — particularly in carpeted areas, pet bedding, or upholstered furniture.
  • Red, itchy bites on your skin — commonly found on ankles and lower legs, often appearing in small clusters or lines.
  • Hair loss or irritated skin on pets — caused by constant scratching, which can lead to bald patches or hot spots.
  • Small white eggs or larvae — visible in pet bedding, carpet fibers, or along baseboards if you look closely.
  • Pale gums in pets — in severe infestations, excessive blood loss from fleas can cause anemia, particularly in young or small animals.

If you're noticing one or more of these signs, it's a strong indication that fleas have taken up residence in your home.
